Brazil Nuts In Shell – 500g

Brazil Nuts In Shell – 500g

The name of this nut gives its origin away. Yes, the magnificent Brazil nut tree grows in the jungle of the Amazon Rain Forest.  It is the ultimate nut for large parrots such as the Macaw and Red Tailed Black Cockatoo due to the rock-hard shell. The extremely hard-shelled seeds are dark brown and wedged shaped, hiding within it a kernel that is white, oily and rich tasting.  Brazil nuts are extremely high in the antioxidant selenium and a good source of calcium and manganese, containing 184 calories and 4 grams of protein per ounce.

Not for the small beaked, the Brazil nut enclosed within its shell can sort the weak from the strong. We recommend that first time users crack the shell before feeding them to your bird to check for any obvious contamination and general precaution.  This will also let your feathered friend know that there is in fact a prize inside the shell once given whole.

Share and share alike: Because all the nuts and seeds provided by My Parrot Shop are of the highest human grade there's no reason why you can't partake in the nut and seed bounty too. And why not? They're not only healthy but totally scrumptious as well!

Feeding Guide

Nuts and seeds contain many high-value nutrients essential for parrots, but they’re also full of fat and should be supplied in small quantities.  Please reference a species-specific book or something similar to determine the most suitable quantity for your bird. As a general rule though, small birds don’t need more than a lightly heaped teaspoon per day. The larger parrots only need a small handful (approx. 5-6 large nuts in shell) per day, and species such as the large macaws need a regular sized handful (about 7-9 large nuts in shell). Aviary breeding birds can receive more, with some species like macaws responding very favourably to comparatively high quantities.

Storage Guide

Nuts should be kept cool and dry to prevent them going rancid or getting weevil infestations. It is best to store them below 21°C in an airtight bag or container. Refrigerate or freeze in well-sealed moisture-proof containers or bags to significantly extend shelf life. The lower the temperature, the longer the shelf life will be. In a pantry cupboard, hulled nuts will last for a few weeks, or nuts in shell will last up to three months. In the fridge they can be kept for 6 months or more in a freezer they can be kept for a year or more.
