Newsletter #11 - March 2009

Hello Everybody

Welcome to the My Parrot Shop Newsletter for March 2009. It's been bucketing down with rain here in Melbourne this weekend, a welcome respite from the drought which has had such tragic consequences in the last month.

This month we're very excited to present our new Organic Sprouting Mixes, new Rope Perches & Twisters, new Cages, a DVD review and more, read on . . .

Organic Sprouting Mixes and the Easy-Sprout

Organic Sprouting MixesOver the last 6 months we’ve been busy little birds researching, designing and trialling our most new and exciting My Parrot product yet: Organic Sprouting Mixes!

Sprouts are a living food absolutely packed full of vitamins, trace minerals, protein, antioxidants and chlorophyll. Best of all sprouting increases the level of enzymes, the key to health (and life itself!), by 10 - 100 times.

Organic Sprouting MixesAll ingredients in the My Parrot Sprout Mixes have been researched for their nutritional suitability for parrots and the seeds for each mix have been carefully selected to sprout at the same time and in harmony with each other.

On top of that, with only Australian grown and organic ingredients (i.e. no chemicals or irradiation – serious inhibitors for sprouting!), these sprout mixes are good for sprouting and good for the earth! (By the way, we also use biodegradable packaging; the same packaging we’ve used for most of the toy parts and foot toys the past couple of years.)

Organic Sprouting MixesAlong with our new sprout mixes we also offer the Easy-Sprout sprouter. Caroline (who is a hopeless gardener) tested several different sprouting containers including jars and hemp bags and found that the Easy-sprout was the only one that foiled her inbuilt plant-killing talent. If you’re a beginner or you just want it to be easy (without the price tag), this sprouter is quite simply the best you will find!

Perches and Twisters!

You're a StarIts been a long time coming, but we finally have rope perches, with bird-safe stainless steel attachments! The gentle give of these soft cotton perches can be very comforting for birds with arthritis or sores, or birds that just want a rest from the concrete and wood. They're well constructed and come in a variety of lengths and diameters providing a multitude of options for cage placement.

You're a Star We also have Twisters!!! The Twisters (aka 'boings') have stainless steel attachments too and are well sized for a proper swinging and climbing adventure.

Chasing Birds DVD Review

Chasing Birds DVDABC have released a new DVD called Chasing Birds. We watched it yesterday morning and found it very entertaining.

Chasing Birds follows three teams of highly-enthusiastic 'twitchers' who have entered the ‘Twitchathon’ which is held annually in Australia. The aim of the competition is to spot as many different bird species as possible in 24 hours.

Traversing environments ranging from rainforest to coastal wetlands to suburban Sydney, and travelling up to 500km, some sleep-deprived teams may spot in excess of 200 species in a day!

Each team has a different style and approach to the competition, some travelling vast distances with others preferring to concentrate on a smaller well-known area. For some teams the fuel of choice is coffee, while for others it's all about "birds and beer". We were especially amused by the team of young larrikins who call themselves the "Hunter Home-Brewers".

Part nature documentary, part reality comedy, this is 54 minutes of birdbrained fun, "the thrill of the hunt" being so intense that one competitor notes "sometimes we almost forget to have morning tea!".

Quality Cages from My Parrot Shop

Website UpgradeAs you know we’ve been trying to source some high-quality cages for some time now and we can finally report that things are progressing nicely on that front.

We're currently constructing and photographing a few cages - including a 40” wide one and a great house shaped one with a swish patio playstand - to put on the website in the next few weeks.

Website UpgradeWe can confirm that the quality of the powder coat is excellent and the construction sound (with all the bolt holes matching up to cause far less headaches when you unpack them and start trying to build them!). Most are a very attractive dark green and silver antique colour and with all the standard bells and whistles - dowling perch, food bowls, seed catchers etc.

As mentioned above, these cages will be available on our website soon, but if you're really keen, give us a call or email and we'll do a good deal for you.

Website UpgradeRegarding the special order of super-duper sized cages we’ve mentioned in previous newsletters we also have tentative good news. We’ve had some prices quoted and they’re actually pretty good, however we’re still waiting on information regarding what our minimum order will need to be – a highly important factor for a pre-paid scenario! We’ll keep you updated but please call to discuss it with us if you think you might be interested in purchasing a cage bigger than 40” (anywhere up to 2 metres across!) – any interest shown makes it more likely we’ll go through with it!

New My Parrot Foot Toys

We've added three new Foot Toys to the My Parrot range. Introduce the alphabet to your parrot with Script Jigglers, in two sizes! And the Little Gems should be perfectly suited to the curious beaks of small birds.

Parrot Society of Australia Magazine

Caroline from My Parrot Shop will be writing a series of articles for the Companion Parrot section of the Parrot Society of Australia magazine. Keep an eye out for the first article 'Parrot Toys 101' in the March-April edition.

Bugfix: Shopping on My Parrot Shop from work

Some of you may have recently come across the annoying problem where your shopping cart emptied every time you added a new product.

After a bit of investigation we realised this was only affecting people who were using our website from their place of work. Our computer geek tracked the problem down to a compatibility issue between our new website software and some 'firewall programs' that companies commonly use to protect their computers from hackers on the Internet.

Anyway it’s all fixed now so feel free to shop at work :)
